About the Artist

Fong Choo is originally from the Republic of Singapore. He completed graduate work at the University of Louisville in 1994. Choo has served as Adjunct Faculty/Resident Artist at Bellarmine University in Louisville since 1990. For over a decade, his fascination and work has been focused on miniature teapots. Choo draws from his awareness of the Yiching tradition; Yiching refers to a historic Chinese pottery-producing district, where small, finely crafted, unglazed, highly polished teapots are still produced.

"What is so exciting about looking at a sleeping tiger?"

"Nothing. But if you take a stick and poke at it, you will remember that tiger for the rest of your life!"

This is part of a conversation I once had at the Minnesota Zoo.

In many ways, this parallels my attitude towards clay: it requires poking to awaken it. One must push the limits, test waters, search, prod and explore its many boundaries.

What is mastery to Choo?
“I am big on acquiring skill… I want to talk the talk and walk the walk.”
