About the Artist

One of the oldest artforms of West African origin in the United States, sweetgrass basketmaking remains an important tradition in the coastal communities of South Carolina and Georgia. Herbert Dixon learned the craft as an apprentice to Yvonne Grovner, a master teacher in the Georgia Council for the Arts’ apprenticeship program. Herbert now makes a variety of beautiful basket from sweetgrass, following a tradition passed down for generations.
