About the Artist

One of the oldest artforms of West African origin in the United States, sweetgrass basketmaking remains an important tradition in the coastal communities of South Carolina and Georgia. A recognized master, Yvonne Grovner continues the Sapelo Island tradition of weaving sweetgrass into a variety of beautiful baskets. As a master teacher in the Georgia Arts Council’s apprenticeship program, she has taught Herbert J. Dixon, now an accomplished artist, sweetgrass basketry.
