Using native
Mississippi materials such as pine needles, gourds,
corn shucks, black walnuts and chinaberries, Bessie
Johnson blends her rich cultural heritage with
artistic vision to produce extraordinary pine
needle baskets. Known for her pine needle basketry
throughout the South, Johnson creates a range
of various shaped and sized bowls and baskets.
Johnson has served as a master artist in the Mississippi
Arts Commission's Folk Art Apprenticeship Program
and was a recipient of a Folk Art Fellowship from
the Arts Commission in 1999.
