Mark Lindquist’s
approach over forty years as a sculptor has been
to appropriate the tools and techniques of woodturning
as elements on his sculptor’s palette. Known
for aesthetic innovations such as celebrating
wood’s irregularities and fibrous structure,
and expressing the concepts of ancient Asian art
in his work, Lindquist has pieces in numerous
collections, including the New York Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the American Art Museum of the
Smithsonian Institution, the High Museum in Atlanta,
and the Chicago Art Institute. Lindquist is also
a technical innovator who views his work as a
three-way collaboration of man, material, and
machine. His aesthetic approach and his technical
breakthroughs laid the groundwork for the contemporary
studio woodturning movement.
