Originally
from High Point, North Carolina, Gwendolyn A.
Magee has been a resident of Jackson, Mississippi
since 1972. She uses textiles, fibers and threads
to construct the narratives that dramatically
articulate historical and present-day events affecting
the lives and psyches of African Americans. Each
artwork serves as a forum for dialogue and communication
with viewers, and is an open invitation for them
to embark with her on a journey of the spirit.
In 2007 she was awarded the United States Artist
Fellowship, being named the 2007 Ford Fellow in
crafts and traditional arts.
