About the Artist

Billie Ruth Sudduth spent almost twenty years as a school psychologist in her “first career” (dealing with testing, measurement, statistics, and math). She has made a natural progression to making baskets that are mathematically-based. Most of her work utilizes Fibonacci’s Nature Sequence, the Golden Mean, fractals, and chaos theory. When responding to her work, you are responding to the same proportions that occur throughout nature. Sudduth’s weaving uses a mathematical structure of spiral growth found in nature to create baskets with a rhythmic, naturally flowing design. She does not separate herself from nature but through her basketry affirms being a part of it.

What is mastery to Sudduth?
“Mastery means being grounded in the history of the craft, understanding the range of artistic expressions in my craft, and finding a ‘style’ that is uniquely my own.”
