About the Artist

Made from thin, hand-rived splits of the white oak tree, white oak baskets have always been part of the central Kentucky landscape. Leona Waddell was raised in Hart County, Kentucky where she learned the basics of basket making from her mother. In an area known for its beautifully crafted baskets, Leona Waddell is considered a master.

What is mastery to Waddell?
“You have to start from the tree. You have to know what a white oak tree is, how to cut it down and block it to where you can work it with a knife. You’ve got to use an ax and a sledgehammer and wedges and a fro.”
