Nicario Jiménez, retablos maker
Nicario Jiménez grew up in the Andes Mountains — through which 16th- to 19th- century Spanish priests carried retablos of Catholic Saints. His great-grandfather created retablos of Saint Mark; these two-dimensional, portable wooden boxes filled with figurines, usually made of a mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder, depict religious, historical, political or everyday events. Jiménez’ work references both his life in Ayacucho, Peru, and in his new home in the U.S.
