“A lot of the respect my generation
has been given needs to be placed with the other generation
who taught us.”
Growing up in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.,
Henrietta Snype remembers walking a mile to sell her
family’s baskets on Highway 17. She learned basketmaking
from her mother, Mary Mazyck, and grandmother Elizabeth
Coakley Johnson. A dedicated teacher and cultural advocate,
Snype went on to help found the Mt. Pleasant Basketmakers’
Association in 1988, which is dedicated to promoting,
protecting and preserving the tradition for generations
to come.
