Billie Ruth Sudduth, basketmaker
For Billie Ruth Sudduth, the
rhythm of basketry is like playing music. Her influence comes directly from the Fibonacci sequence—a mathematical relationship in nature discovered by a13th century mathematician. She is also inspired by the forms of Shaker baskets, and her interest in mathematics, chaos theory, fractals and sacred geometry. Although her baskets could be useful, her stated purpose

is “to hold your attention, not your objects.”

“Living just over the ridge from Penland, I am fortunate to live in a community of craftspeople. I have the best of both worlds in that I am involved with the craft community but also with the community as a whole. I am very aware of the needs of the community and feel fortunate that I can use my basketry to reach out to the community.”
