Jon Eric Riis, fiber artist

Riis is a master of contemporary tapestry, weaving psychological and sociopolitical messages into his coat-based works of art. Freedom’s Price gives us the opportunity to think about the ironies of clothing as protection, “fatigues” as both military work

garments and decorative state-side street clothing, the suffering experienced in homes in the U.S. and abroad, and the cost of freedom at all levels.

“I attempt to push the tapestry genre, as I investigate issues of identity, life and the human condition. I am also interested in the notions of beauty using myths and historic textiles as points of departure.”
