The loss of coal-mining jobs and
waning demand for local agriculture meant financial
hardship in the mid-1980s for Elliott County farm families.
Enter Minnie Adkins, woodcarver, entrepreneur and community
organizer, who through talent and personal vision has
made Isonville, Kentucky, a center for woodcarving.
When she and her late husband, Garland, were hit hard
financially, she picked up a knife and started a local
cottage industry. Like many artists from this region,
her works reflect a love of farm life and community.
One of her greatest contributions has been to encourage
younger people to keep the carving tradition alive.

behind you and help other people make it too.” |
