Shawne Major, mixed media artist

Materials, and the processes by which they are joined, are central to the meaning of Shawne Major’s work. “My materials are acquired almost exclusively through second-hand sources. From flea markets, garage sales and acquaintances … these objects bring with them fragments of experience through their associations and history.” Choosing objects and material that draw upon her working class southern background, she reforms them into works reminiscent of her childhood memory.

“My cultural experience serves as the accent for my visual language. It is the filter through which I see the world and the voice through

which I discuss concepts that are important to me. My work is not only about my cultural experience but of it”.

“Katrina and Rita have stripped Louisiana naked. Exposed to a brutal light are government neglect and the blatant social calculus reaffirming the persistent inequities due to race and class. At the same time, the aftermath of these disasters have affected us all, in Louisiana and the US. It would be very difficult to find someone who does not have some kind of connection to New Orleans whether it be friends, family, business, sentimental attachment, or a growing sense of vulnerability. I feel that my recent work reflects this increased vulnerability.”
