Whether you will be able to attend Tradition/Innovation
in person during its nine-state
tour, or will experience it through this website,
you’ll want to explore the rich array of the sounds
and sights of the masterworks and the artists who created
them. The Photo
Gallery lets you view work by each artist in Tradition/Innovation,
as well as link to their individual Artist Pages. Scan
the Gallery to find images you’re particularly
interested in – or take your time and browse each
artist’s work!
Tradition/Innovation features
three-dimensional works of contemporary craft and traditional
art. The 360°
Gallery lets you experience the full impact of four
of these remarkable pieces, presented in a 360-degree
animation.
Virtual Galleries
let you “tour” the exhibit either through
the four sections—Cultural Practice, Relationship
to Place, Innovation and Evolution, and Connections—of
the physical exhibit, or to view the artwork by medium.
Through the Audio
Tour you can hear an overview of the exhibit, featuring
several artists telling their own story of their creative
process, artistic and family history and relationship
to their work.
21 of the exhibit’s artists
provided Audio
Interviews. These unedited conversations between
the artist and a professional folklorist or researcher
are a unique window into their lives, process and community.
Written
interviews from 36 of the artists also provide insight
into how the artists approach their work, connect with
others, and have been influenced.
Visitors Guide – download
a PDF of this four-color Guide. Featuring 10 of
the exhibit’s artists, the Visitors’ Guide
is a way for you to explore and experience more deeply
10 of the artworks, and learn about the artists who
created them. It is designed to move you through the
four sections of the exhibit so you can see a range
of artwork in different media and styles.
