If you are using a smart board, you might want to link to http://www.alaweb.com/~haygens/baskbio.html for some shots of the preparation of white oak splits.

After viewing the PowerPoint™, divide the students into three research teams. One team will research the Gullah tradition of sweetgrass baskets, one the Cherokee tradition of river cane baskets, and the third the Euro-Appalachian tradition of white oak basketry.

Assign each team to prepare a presentation (you may assign the format or leave it open-ended) that explores the history of the tradition, the artists highlighted in the Tradition/Innovation exhibit and their role in the tradition, the importance of the tradition in preserving a unique cultural heritage, and any threats to the continuation of the tradition (economic, environmental, or cultural).
